Clouzot's most famous movie is probably "Les Diaboliques". This was made in occupied France and was not popular with anyone either in authority or with influence -- apparently, it hit close to home for some. While it's more domestic and low key than his later movies, "Le Corbeau" (French) builds tension well. The closest counterpart would be either Claude Chabrol -- especially in it's look at French bourgeoisie, or Alfred Hitchcock -- with his American counterparts such as "The Wrong Man."
