The Class (French)

Laurent Cantet makes empathetic movies that don't allow people easy ways out of their situations. "The Class" takes place in an inner city middle school in Paris. You know the teachers, students and their families only from what you see at school.

Lead actor and co-screenwriter, Francois Begadeau, plays a newish and idealistic teacher, passionate and informal with his students. This is not always the strength the teacher thinks it is.

I've got two other Cantet movies in my queue. I have seen "Human Resources", which was equally good, if a little melodramatic towards the end. I recommend even if you aren't applying for Teach for America or have an interest in Parisian public education (and those of you who are).
