No horror movie money shot is as effective unless the movie makers make me uncomfortable with a buildup that happens in the dark, or off camera.“Cat People” is made from those scenes. There are no gruesome or violent on-camera events. Almost everything is suggested and could almost be rationalized away. But the effect is spooky and unsettling.

In “Alien”, there are gory and grisly shots. But if you watch it after “Cat People”, you can appreciate the set-up, get through the “boo” moments, and admire Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley as she goes up against the monster.
