Peeping Tom

Michael Powell was one of the most distinguished film directors in England since the end of the silent era. He made this creepy, tense, almost overwhelming thriller (most of the violence occurs out of camera range, but not out of hearing), and his career was destroyed. Now, it is studied and honored as a masterpiece.
