Program – Stepping on the Devil’s Tail

The bayou country of Louisiana is more mythic than real to those of us who don’t live there. Populated by ancient exiles and filled with exotic dangers, these swamps are not hospitable without someone to help. The characters in “Southern Comfort” and “Down By Law” are challenged by their relationships with one another, not to mention losing their way.
“Southern Comfort” tells the story of a National Guard weekend exercise gone bad. Lots of bad stuff happens before the movie is over.
“Down By Law” takes Jim Jarmusch’s laconic approach to the same bad stuff. This time it’s three guys breaking out of a New Orleans jail. They get just as lost.
